Week 4 A Family Matter
In 1997, my husband and I were married in the Oakland, California temple. The temple covenant was something that we valued and our commitment to each other was clear. The last 22 years I have thought often about something that was promised to us by the sealer. He was tall and powerful in spirit and emotion when he explained to us that our marriage was more than a commitment to eachother, it was a covenant together with the Lord. He described this union to be like the symbol of a triangle, with us at each base point and Jesus Christ at the top point. The symbolism of this triangle has been something that I have considered many times. It has something that I have heard several times since, including in Elder Bednar's talk, "Marriage is Essential to His Eternal Plan." He identifies the focal point in a covenant marriage to be the Lord Jesus Christ.
"Now consider what happens in the relationship between the man and the woman as they individually and steadily “come unto Christ” and strive to be “perfected in Him” (Moro. 10:32 (Links to an external site.)). Because of and through the Redeemer, the man and the woman come closer together."
What I have learned through the years and was reminded of this week is the importance of Heavenly Fathers plan for all of His children. It includes families being together forever as exalted beings. President Nelson said, "In God's eternal plan, salvation is an individual matter; exaltation is a family matter." We not only need the Savior as our Redeemer for the redemption of our sin and His Atonement to make eternal life possible, but in order to receive exaltation to the highest degree of celestial glory, we need the ordinances of the temple, including marriage.
